A Remembrance of Things Past

The Explorers spent a couple of sessions in February 2011 making their own “fossils”—but unlike natural ones that take thousands of years, theirs took considerably less time.

If at first you don't succeed.......

On January 29, 2009, the Explorers took another stab at creating personal fossils with plaster of paris. By working more quickly, and especially by starting with a much more watery mixture, the project had a much better outcome. Each of the Explorers ended up with a nice “fossil” cast of their own footprint or handprint. And as an added bonus (thanks to the creative mind of one of the club mothers who volunteered to help out), a touch of food coloring in each mixing bowl provided some tints that are rarely seen in “natural” fossils.

Do experiments always turn out properly? Umm, no.

In January the Explorers set out to create some fossils—not in the oodles of years that the normal process requires, but in mere minutes. Were they successful? Well, yes and no.
